The Gili Islands, 'gili' meaning small in Sasak, are three unique islands located off the northwest coast of Lombok.
Known as Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan the islands do not permit motorised transport to affect the fragile environment, therefore there are no cars or motorbikes to transport you around. A horse and cart (cidomo) can take you to your accommodation and you can hire a bicycle or enjoy a leisurely walk to acquaint yourself with one of the islands.
The islands are drier in climate than Lombok but still have a rainy season that encompasses November through to April. The most popular time to visit is during the months of July and August and December to January due to the different global holidays. You can reach the islands by fast or slow boat or alternatively fly into Lombok and catch a boat from there to one of the three Gili islands.
Gili Trawangan is the most populated of the three islands for both local inhabitants and western tourists and is known as the 'party island'. Gili Air is the smallest of the islands whereas Gili Meno embraces simplicity and you will encounter a more remote experience staying on this island, perfect for newly weds. A unique feature on Meno is the salt lake and take time to look at the turtle hatchery and bird park while visiting.
There are a number of different accommodation options from smallish resorts, luxury villas, budget hotels to beach shacks to stay in on all three islands. A wide range of food options is available also along the beachfront and some of the resorts also have restaurants attached to them. Local Asian food, seafood barbeques to sushi and even an Irish pub (on Trawangan) you lack for nothing to eat or drink while you stay on these beautiful islands.
With white sandy beaches and translucent, turquoise water the Gili's are idyllic for relaxing and enjoying your time with that special someone, family or friends.
The island fish and coral life is abundant therefore snorkelling, diving, fishing and swimming are popular pastimes. Take a look at the turtle hatchery, grab a sunlounge and sunbathe overlooking the beautiful ocean waters, chill out and enjoy reading that new book, go surfing or sea kayaking, ride a bicycle or take a walk around and explore the island and finally at the end of the day, watch the stunning sunset. Whatever you do while on the Gili's, you will bask in the breathtaking scenery and have a holiday to remember.
